Rev. Immanuel Petersen, 94

The Rev. Immanuel Petersen, 94, of Stoughton, Wis., died July 10, 2000, at Skaalen, Home in Stoughton.

Funeral services were held July 13 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Oregon, Wis. The Rev. Steve Ristau Hanson, the Rev. Pat Siegeler and the Rev. Robert Beckstrand officiated. Interment was at Prairie Mound Cemetery.

The Rev. Immanuel Petersen was born on Dec. 28, 1905, in Kenmore, N.D., to P.C.K. and Petrea (Damskow) Petersen.

He married Elna Hofgaard on May 25, 1933, in Minden. She preceded him in death on Jan. 30, 1984.

Petersen attended Dana College in Blair, then transferred to St. Olaaf College in North-field, Minn., where he graduated in 1930. He was ordained into the United Evangelical Lutheran Church after graduation from Trinity Theological Seminary in Blair in May, 1933. He served pulpits in Herman, Orum, Ruskin and Abdall; Geneva, Minn., Ellendale, Minn., Easton, Calif., as well as Bethany Home in Minden and St. John’s Lutheran Church in Oregon, Wis.

Petersen retired from St. John’s Lutheran Church in 1973. He served First Lutheran Church in Stoughton, Wis., as a visitation pastor until 1997. He served as welcome wagon for the Oregon (Wis.) Chamber of Commerce from 1975 through 1990, promoting the town of Oregon and encouraging new residents to attend the church of their choice.

The Rev. Petersen is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Scott Miller of Oregon, Wis., and Mary and David Paul of Bloomington, Ill., two sons and daughters-in-law, The Rev. Noel and Ruby Petersen of Omaha, and the Rev. Paul and Carol Petersen of Pickerell; a brother and sister-in-law, the Rev. Alvin and Edel Peterson of Lincoln; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by eight brothers and a sister.

Memorials are suggested to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Oregon and First Lutheran Church in Stoughton.

Olson-Holzhuter-Cress was in charge of funeral arrangements.
