Ada Bell Gates was born February 23, 1891, at Lincoln, Nebraska. She was a graduate of the Lincoln High School and attended Nebraska Wesleyan University and Midland College and the State University of Nebraska. After her college work she taught school in Holland, Kennard and Ulysses, Nebraska.

She was united in marriage with Ralph E. Fairchild August 13, 1913. Mr. Fairchild was at the time engaged in business in David City, Nebraska. Here the newly wedded couple resided until the fall of 1916 when they moved to a farm near Kennard. A few years later they both resumed teaching in Kennard and vicinity, when in 1930 they moved to Blair.

Mrs. Fairchild was converted to Christ when a girl and united with the Presbyterian Church. After her marriage she united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and with her husband and son, Howard, she united with the Blair Methodist Church in 1932. She was a zealous Christian and was very active in her church work, such as music, teaching, and in the various societies of the church. She was compelled to abandon practically all of her active church work when her health failed in 1929.

She was active in civic affairs, a member of the Blair Women's Club and served on the program committee last year, was given a place on one of its weekly programs. Her topic for this year was entitled "Women of the Bible". A subject she could well and ably handle.

Her illness grew gradually worse from week to week and she became bedfast about June 1st of this year. She was able, however, to see visitors and friends for short periods who came to the house and would converse quite freely with each of them. She departed this life on Friday, September 4, 1936. Those of the immediate family who are left to mourn her are: her husband, one son, Howard, who graduated from Blair High School in the 1936 class; three sisters, Mrs. Lena Rose, of Scottsbluff, Nebraska; Mrs. Sadie Harlamert and Mrs. Etha Layton, both of Lincoln; one brother, O. W. Gates, also of Lincoln; with other relatives and a great host of friends and acquaintances.

Mrs. Fairchild was always one of a happy cheerful nature and she possessed those characteristics and qualities which makes and holds many friends. She will be greatly missed by her family, her relatives and the numerous friends who loved and trusted in her.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Methodist Church in Blair, with Rev. D. A. McCullough officiating and interment was made in the Kennard Cemetery.
