GERTRUDE CARLBERG, 93

Gertrude Carlberg, 93, died Monday morning, May 14, 2007, in her home in Fremont.

Funeral services were Wednesday, May 16, at the First Baptist Church in Fremont. Interment was in Memorial Cemetery.

Gertrude Kubie was born March 29, 1914, in Herman to William and Martha (Kruse) Kubie.

She attended the Broderson School through the elementary grades and, for two years, attended Hill Creek High School. She then attended Herman High School for her last two years, graduating in 1932.

She did domestic work before entering Dana College in 1933, where she earned a certificate for elementary teaching. She earned further educational credits from Wayne State College and Midland College. She taught for three years at the Spiker country school in Washington County.

On Oct. 27, 1937, she married Rolin Carlberg of Arlington in Fremont. They lived on a farm north of Arlington for eight years, then purchased a farm near Ames in 1945, where they lived for 43 years. They moved to Fremont where they lived during their retirement.

Mrs. Carlberg was a member of the First Baptist Church where she served in various ways, with Lydia Circle; the tape ministry of their church services; and assisting the church office with visitation records. She taught Sunday School most of her life, and most recently, it was her Open Circle class.

Mrs. Carlberg is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Ronald Hofer of St. Clair, Mo.; and Mona and Lawrence Niewald of Springfield, Mo.; a brother and sister-in-law, Harvey and Beverly Kubie of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; nieces, nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rolin, in 1996; three brothers, Kenneth, Raymond and William; and a son-in-law, Cleo Casaday.

Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church.

Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont was in charge of arrangements.
