Mrs. Lars J. Petersen

Mrs. Lars J. Petersen died at her home near the Depot store at 7:30 last Friday evening of pneumonia, having been taken sick at Thanksgiving time. She had every care that loving hands could give but the end seemed to be inevitable for her and she was prepared for the long journey. Her daughter, Mrs. Lulu Petersen, who has made her home with her parents since the death of her husband six years ago, was with her constantly, and did all she could for her aged mother during her long illness. The funeral was held at the residence at 11 o’clock. Rev. J. Rasmussen, of Kennard, officiating. Interment was in the Orum cemetery in the family lot. Mattie Petersen was born in Moen, Denmark, Oct. 31, 1843, so was past 79 years of age. She was married there to Lars J. Petersen October 25, 1867, and came to this country in 1880, settling in the Spiker neighborhood, which was their home until they moved to this city six years ago. Nine children were born to them, four dying in infancy. Those living are Mrs. Mary Weber, of Herman, Mrs. Margaret Zeigler, of this city, Jens P. Petersen, of Ft. Calhoun, Mrs. Emma Rogert, of Herman and Mrs. Lulu Petersen. She is survived by her husband, also thirty-two grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Mrs. Petersen was a home lover and her children were everything to her. This love was fully returned by the children and her death and separation was thus doubly hard to bear. They have the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement.

GOOD MOTHER CALLED TO HER REWARD

Mrs. Matta Peterson, wife of Lars Jorgen Peterson, passed away at her home on east Front street at 7:30 p.m. Friday, January 5, aged 79 years.

Miss Matta Peterson was born in Moen, Denmark, October 31, 1843, and was married to Lars Jorgen Peterson October 25, 1867. They came from Denmark to Washington county, Nebraska, 42 years ago, and located on a farm six miles west of Herman where they lived until six years ago when they moved to Blair. Nine children were born to this union, four of who preceded their mother to the other world. They were Mrs. Annie Anderson, who died a few years ago at the age of 46; Karen, at 13; Carl at 5, and one in infancy.

The living children are Mrs. Mary Weber of Herman, Mars Margaret Zeigler, Blair; Jens Peterson, Ft. Calhoun; Mrs. Emma Rogert, Herman, and Mrs. Lulu Peterson, a widow, who with her little son, Ronald, made their home with their mother and father in Blair. Thirty-two grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren also survive.

Mrs. Peterson was a woman who always did her part in life to her friends and neighbors, but her whole life was centered in her family circle. She idolized her little grandson with whom she was daily associated and who reciprocated her affection to the fullest extent. She was a good mother and her vacant chair at the fireside will ever bring tender memories to the family.

Short private funeral services were held at the house on Monday and public obsequies were conducted at the Danish Lutheran church. Rev. Rasmussen of Orum officiating, and interment was made at Orum, near the place where she spent the greater part of her life. Many were present to testify to their friendship, as well as the beautiful flowers which eloquently spoke of the esteem in which she was held.
