Velma Fees Fairchild, 95

Services for Velma Fees Fairchild, 95, who died August 31, 1992, at Kearney County Community Hospital, were Thursday, September 3 at Layton Funeral Home. Rev. Bill Jardine officiated. Graveside services were held at the Kennard Cemetery in Kennard that afternoon.

Velma Wynona Fees was born January 2, 1897, at Lenox, Iowa, to Dr. Arthur Waldo and Harriet Ruie Black Fees. The youngest of five children, she moved to Blair in 1904 with her family where she completed her education from the Blair school system. She married Floyd Gollehon. A daughter, Donna Harriet was born at Blair.

She remained in Blair except for a few years until her marriage to Edgar O. Fairchild in February, 1946. The Fairchilds moved to Minden that same year, entering into the grocery retail business. After retiring from the store, they and Donna Gollehon continued living in Minden.

After the death of her daughter, Donna in 1974, and her husband, Ed in 1975, she remained in the home until entering long-term care in the Minden facility in October, 1989.

She was a member of the W. U. Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star No. 182 and the Women’s Club, all of Minden.

She studied vocal music and attended art school where she studied pastels, oils and water color. She designed her own technique in china painting. She managed a ready-to-wear business and designed patterns for a fancy work company in Blair. She also assisted her father in his office until his death.

In addition to her husband and daughter, she was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Eula in infancy, Inez Weyer and Belva Green and a brother, Don Green.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Layton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
