John McCarthy, 79

John O. McCarthy, M.D., of rural Omaha, died at his home Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1997.

Services were Saturday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Calhoun. Burial was in the Fort Calhoun Cemetery.

Dr. McCarthy was born March 27 1918 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1937. He received his pre-medical schooling from Creighton University between 1942 and 1946 and graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical School in 1951. He served in the United States Air Force. He had a private medical practice and was on staff at Bishop Clarkson Memorial Hospital; the University of Nebraska Hospital; Bergan Mercy Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital. He was an obstetrics and gynecology instructor at Creighton University School of Medicine and was assistant clinical profession in OB/Gyn at the University of Nebraska Medical School.

He was a member of the Nebraska State Medical Society, Omaha Douglas County Medical Society and the Omaha Midwest Clinical Society.

Survivors are his wife, Kathy McCarthy; children and their spouses, Patrick McCarthy and fiancé Marilyn Anderson; Edward McCarthy; all of Omaha; John Francis and Greta McCarthy, and Timothy McCarthy, all of Red Oak, Iowa; Kathleen and Chris Johnson, Stanton, Iowa; John Michael and Lyn McCarthy, Amy Barta-Becker and Thomas Becker; Guy Barta; Stephen Patrick McCarthy and Michael Kelly McCarthy, all of Omaha; grandchildren, Michael McCarthy, Thomas McCarthy, Kaitlin Buscher, Zachary McCarthy, Joseph McCarthy, Kaleb McCarthy and Mary Elizabeth Becker; a brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Sandra McCarthy, Omaha; sisters and brothers-in-law, Patricia and Angela Leoni, Petuluma, Calif.; Connie and Joe Christilles, Manchester, N.H.; Becky and Ray Barta, Jr. and Becky and Ray Barta, Jr., all of Omaha; a sister-in-law, Joan McCarthy, Omaha; brothers-in-law, Clay Griffin, Texas; John Bin, Petaluma, Calif. and Gerald Jancik, Omaha; his mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Jancik, Omaha; a cousin, Betty Garrison, Edgewater, Md., and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Memorials may be given to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Building Fund or the Fort Calhoun High School Athletic Association.

John A. Gentleman Mortuaries in Omaha was in charge of arrangements.
