HENRY GEHRKE

Ft. Calhoun has lost another one of her valuable and much respected German citizens. Born in Mecklinburgh, Germany, April 7, 1853, he was brought to the United States by his parents when 12 years of age. He brought his family to Washington county in 1883 and bought the former John Allen homestead, where he proved a hardworking and industrious farmer until about fifteen years ago he was taken with an affection of the bladder, which gave him much pain, compelling him to leave the farm, so three years later he purchased a home here in this city, where for a number of years he was one of our closest neighbors, and when we were ill with pneumonia some years ago he was kindness itself and no one had a kinder hand-clasp for us when we were again able to be on the street. Four times he was operated on, the last time being fatal as his vitality was completely exhausted. He leaves a wife and three grown children, all useful and well known. Mrs. Ernest Doll and Edward of Omaha and Mrs. W. J. Willis of Fairfield, who were with him when he died. His one brother, John, lives in Omaha. He was buried from his residence January 10, 1912, Rev. Graf of Ponca Creek officiating. Mrs. Joe Bolln and Mrs. Edward Brenner sang the anthems. The pallbearers were George and Henry Rohwer, Peter Holst, Jacob Seirk, Joe Bolln and W. Frahm. Honorary pallbearers: Tim Ohrt, John Hindrichsen, Peter Schmidt, Sr., Hans Schwager, John Sorensen and Deidlef Teitgen. The coffin was encased in an air-tight burglar-proof steel casket.

CARD OF THANKS: To the many friends who, during the prolonged illness and at the time of the death of our beloved father, with their many kind acts and endearing sympathies have made our bereavement and burden of sorrow the easer to bear, we wish to extend our heartfelt thanks. Mrs. Minnie Gehrke, Mr. and Mrs. E. Doll and family, Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Willis, E. W. Gehrke. ~~~Obituaries courtesy of the Nebraska Washington County Genealogical Society.
