Text – “Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord” Rev. 14.13

James McCloud was born Oct. 14, 1816, in Charleston, West Virginia. He remained there for several years and then went to Kentucky, where he was married to Anne Elizabeth Dashman of Newport, Kentucky. In 1874 he came to Nebraska. He was called to part with his wife in death June 28, 1881. September 4, 1889 he was married to Mary Ann Hart (better known as Hamilton). Out of the eight children by his first wife only three are alive today, Mrs. J. W. Mayle, Mrs. James S. Thorndyke and John A. McCloud. He was one out of nine children and out of these nine only two are alive, Mrs. Jacob Carter and Mrs. Jane Carter.

In the forepart of the summer a cancer broke out upon his nose, and then a little later others broke out upon his face. He went to Omaha and had 5 or 6 taken out but owing to his age and weakness nothing could be done. Three weeks ago last Saturday he came home and kept getting worse. After wishing his son good-bye he seemed to fail rapidly until about 8:45 Sunday morning, about the same time and in about the same way as his former wife, he yielded up his spirit to his God.

He made a profession of religion some 18 or 14 years ago during a revival at Cuming City, and was baptized by Rev. J. D. Hungate at Cuming City. When their building was moved from Cuming City down here, the Cuming City church organization met at Pleasant View. There he remained a member as long as the church existed.

Pilot 28 April 1892

On Tuesday morning in the Baptist church was held the funeral of James McCloud, a well-known and long time resident of this city. He was born in Virginia in 1816 where he resided for some time. The cause of his death was the continual eating of cancers, and for some time past they have been considered dangerous. He has been in an Omaha hospital for some months being treated, but to no avail. Mr. McCloud leaves three children – John A. McCloud, Mrs. Mayle and Mrs. James Thorndike- and two sisters – Mrs. Jake Carter and Mrs. Jane Carter – his first wife being dead some twelve years and he married his second wife five years ago. He passed away on Sunday morning last at 8:45 at his home in Blair.
