D. W. Rutledge was born at Oakdale, Antelope County, Nebr., June 8, 1873, and passed away April 5th, 1965 at Blair, Nebr., at the age of 91 years.

When he was an infant, his parents moved to a farm east of Herman, where he later attended Homestead School. Here he grew to manhood and at the age of 22, married Catherine Cooper at Fremont, Nebraska, on March 30th, 1895. This pioneering young couple Homesteaded on one of the last claims in the area east of Herman and lived there for 6 years. Another 10 years was spent on two farms near there before they moved to their home in Herman.

For three years Mr. Rutledge operated a livery and garage in Herman. On 26th February, 1914 they moved to the Woods-Updike Ranch whey they lived for 26 years and on the 26th of February, 1940, moved back to their home in Herman. Since 1940 they lived in Herman, but spent this winter in Blair.

On March 30th of this year, David and Catherine Rutledge celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary.

They have 6 children, 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and three fifth generation great-great-grandchildren.

Immediate survivors are: his wife, Catherine, and children, Mrs. Bethel Denny, Eldorado, Kansas; William H. Rutledge, Blair, Nebr.; Roy Rutledge, Omaha, Nebr.; Dr. D.I. Rutledge, Boston, Mass.; Mrs. Ralph Cohen, Omaha, Nebr.; and Maj. Charles W. Rutledge, RAF Alconbury, England.

A man whose address has been Herman, Nebraska for 90 years will be remembered. D. W. Rutledge will be best remembered as a “Man’s man”.

Funeral services were at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at the American Legion Hall in Herman. The Rev. Percy Bruns officiated and the Hamel-Peck Mortuary of Tekamah, assisted by Henry Truhlsen, were in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Herman Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Waldo Hancock, J. B. Jensen, Dr. W. I. Nelson, Fern West, Neil Fausset and Chris Korshoj.
