Former Washington County resident Mildred A. P. Ruwe, 88, of Fremont, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at the Fremont Area Medical Center.

Funeral services were 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Salem Lutheran Church of Fontanelle, the Rev. Robert Kocher officiated. Interment was in the Salem Lutheran Cemetery.

Mildred A. P. Ruwe was born Nov. 18, 1914, in the family home north of Arlington to William and Pauline (Ruwe) Loosing. She was baptized Dec. 20, 1914, and confirmed April 1, 1928. At the age of nine, she moved with her family to a farm northwest of Fremont. She attended the Beebe School.

On March 28, 1943, she married August Ruwe at the Salem Lutheran Church in Fremont. During the first year of their marriage, they lived on a farm near Herman. They then moved to the farm north of Fontanelle. In 1995, Mrs. Ruwe moved into Fremont.

She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church of Fontanelle, where she had been active in her church circle and the quilting group, and for many years, she supervised funeral lunches there. She also donated quilts to Care Core in Fremont, the Salvation Army, and the Open Door Mission. She had been active in the Sunshine Club, and the Fontanelle Extension Club.

She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Harold and Judy Ruwe of Hooper, and Paul and Karen Ruwe of Arlington; two daughters and son-in-law, Dorothy and Gary Steckelberg of Nickerson and Ellen Vollmer of Fontanelle; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to Salem Lutheran Church of Fontanelle.

Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont was in charge of arrangements.
