Rite Friday for coach, teacher Rosie Schulke

Fremont, Neb. –Rosie Hayes Schulke of Fremont, a former teacher and coach who was the first woman to join the Nebraska Coaches Association, has died.

Schulke died Saturday at home of colon cancer, said her husband, Jon. She was 65.

Born June 28, 1937, in Akron, Colo., Schulke lived with her family in a sod house for a year before moving to Arkansas and then to Lyons, Neb., where she grew up her husband said.

She graduated from Lyons High School in 1955, earned a Nebraska teacher’s certificate from Dana College in Blair in 1957 and a bachelor’s degree in education from Wayne (Neb.) State College in 1968.

She married Jon Schulke June 23, 1956.

Rosie Schulke taught and coached volleyball at Ponca High School from 1957 to 1973. The couple also built a golf course there and operated football, basketball and cheerleading clinics, her husband said.

After the family moved to Fremont in 1974, Rosie Schulke taught at Cedar Bluffs Grade School and coached volleyball and basketball for two years before retiring.

She was an avid swimmer and lifeguard in her early days, but golf—a game she took up at the suggestion of her father-in-law—was her passion, her husband said.

“She was a very good golfer,” he said. “She’s played in a lot of state tournaments over the years.”

She also liked to quilt. She was a member and past worthy matron of the Eastern Star Lodge in Ponca. She was a member of the Nebraska Women’s Amateur Golf Association and the Fremont Golf Club.

A graveside memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday at the Craig (Neb.) Cemetery.

Other survivors include sons Starr Schulke of Lincoln and Jan Schulke and Saylor Schulke, both of Fremont; daughter Joni Hegy of Fremont; mother Fern Frangenberg of Lyons; brother Tim Hayes of Lincoln; sister Helen Drummond of Lyons; and seven grandchildren.
