Howard K. Surland, 92, of Fort Calhoun, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, in Fort Calhoun.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Sievers-Sprick Funeral Home in Fort Calhoun. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, January 21, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Fort Calhoun Cemetery with military honors provided by the Fort Calhoun American Legion Post 348.

Howard K. Surland was born Oct. 12, 1921, in Omaha, to Carl H. and Jessie N. (Rasmusson) Surland.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942-1945 and served in World War II and the South Pacific and Iwo Jima.

On December 10, 1982, he married Jonnie Hoheisel.

He is survived by his wife, Jonnie Surland, of Fort Calhoun; daughter and son-in-law Lisa Hillmer and Jason Lewis of Kearney, Mo.; son and daughter-in-law Greg and Carri Hillmer of Fort Calhoun; brother and sister-in-law Gene and Nancy Surland of Cedar Bluffs; grandchildren: Megan and Abby Hillmer, Madison Pope, and Dalton, Dylan and Devan Lewis; many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Fort Calhoun American Legion Post 348.

Interment: Fort Calhoun Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials suggested to Fort Calhoun American Legion Post #348.
