Former Blair Grocer Tells About Early Days

We shall begin with the Bill Sass Store in our memories in regard to “Old View in The Central Business District”, Enterprise, Feb. 12, 1976, Blair, Nebraska. Bill Sass had the largest General Store in Blair forty or fifty years ago, in a building erected in 1897, at the corner of 17th and Washington St. Al Reeh, now of Omaha in retirement, was his manager. Mike Nielsen had charge of the shoe department. Bill Sass did too much credit business finally had to discontinue. He decided to move to The North Side small grocery north 16th St. north of the railroad tracks, keeping Al Reeh as manager, Mike Nielsen moving to a small building west in the same block with his shoe business. Where the Blair Florists now are located, next door, directly west of the Sass Building, was the Oscar Holmes bakery. Felix Beyer owner of the building. The tall building going west was the Schulz Grocery. Schulz took over from Skox Nielsen, whose son, Harold , had been operating the small grocery. Mrs. Kirby was the forerunner, specializing in fresh ground coffee and tea on a large scale. Schulz purchased this property from Mrs. Andrew Brock and J. Petersen. Mrs. Kirby, sister of Mrs. Brock, had passed away, so Mrs. Brock and Petersen became the owners.

West of the Schulz store was the Unruh building, now the Lang Furniture Store. Unruh was a customer of Schultz’s when he needed liver sausage, etc., for his lunch. Continuing on west came Kuhn’s Studio, later he Harold Rabbass Studio, then Mike’s Shores, and in the corner of the Block, Boh’s Gas Station. Across the street north from Schulz Grocery was Hugh Wright’s Cream Station. West of Hugh Wright was a grocery store, the last operator Dutch Wolff and wife. East of Hugh Wright, Hans Sorensen’s Shoe Repair, father of well known Harry Sorensen and brother Carl. Then came Max Baine’s Barber Shop. Across the street north from Sass building fifty years ago, the P.Z. store was located. North of this in small frame building was Haller’s Insurance Office.

South of the Sass building was Grace Ballard’s law office. Attorney Walter Huber and others started here, too. In the corner of the block, practical Dr. Fees’ office. Dr. Fees kept a number of goats, believing that goat milk was a remedy for some ailments. Across the street east from Dr. Fees, Babe Lund’s Grocery. Ray Krogh, father of Robert, had his insurance office in the southeast corner of the Sass building for a while. The Sass structure now is, of course, the Kolterman Ben Franklin Store. We remember our good friend C. F. Kolterman. The area south of the above store is occupied by the Safeway store and their parking lot.

May God Bless and keep Blair!

This is a little report by your Bicentennial 96 year old senior citizen Albert Schulz, 1360 North 19th St., Grand Junction, Colorado 81501.
