2 Men Killed in Crash Loved to Ride Cycles

BY CINDY CONNOLLY WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Bruce Killpack and Daniel McFerrin lived seven miles from each other in southwest Iowa, and they loved to ride motorcycles.

The men never met, but they died together this weekend after an accident on a county road near Modale, Iowa.

Killpack, 38, of Missouri Valley, and McFerrin, 25, who lived with his wife in Modale, were killed Sunday night when their motorcycles collided on County Road K-45, 1 1/2 miles north of Modale, said Harrison County Sheriff Merle Sass.

Both men were pronounced dead at Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley shortly after the 9:30 p.m. accident, Sass said.

McFerrin's wife, Janice, who was riding on the back of her husband's 1994 Suzuki motorcycle, was listed in serious condition Monday night at University Hospital in Omaha, where she was flown by medical helicopter after the accident.

Mrs. McFerrin, daughter of Don Nichols, a battalion chief with the Omaha Fire Department, was in the intensive care unit with multiple trauma, including a crushed right leg, said Tim Kaldahl, a hospital spokesman.

McFerrin, an assistant manager of the Baker's supermarket in LaVista, was driving south on the county road when his motorcycle collided head-on with Killpack's northbound 1958 Harley Davidson, Sass said.

The collision occurred in the northbound lane, Sass said, as both drivers were rounding a curve that had a 50 mph speed limit.

Sass said he had not determined whether either of the men was speeding or who was at fault.

The cause of the accident remained under investigation Monday night.

None of the three riders was wearing a helmet, Sass said.

Sonny McFerrin of rural Modale said his son, who developed his love of motorcycles at age 4, usually wore a helmet when he rode.

"But apparently he didn't have one on this time," the elder McFerrin said Monday night.

"I was just in his home and got some clothes for the funeral, and I saw his helmet lying on the floor. But I don't know if he had another one or not. I don't know if that would have helped him anyway," he said.

McFerrin, who lives on a farm west of town, said he bought his son a toy model of a Honda motorcycle when he was 4. Daniel McFerrin had been riding ever since, his father said.

The younger McFerrin and his wife met at an Omaha Baker's store where they both worked and had been married a year and a half. Sonny McFerrin said. Sunday night, he said, they rode McFerrin's new bike to Mondamin for fun and were heading home when the accident occurred.

Killpack's father, Ron Killpack of Beebeetown, Iowa, said his son's 1958 Harley Davidson Hardtail was his pride and joy.

"He'd had it for years. He worked and babied that machine for years. That was his baby," he said.

Ron Killpack said his son managed the Tamarack bowling alley in Missouri Valley and rode his motorcycle whenever he got the chance.

Killpack and a friend from Magnolia, Iowa, were riding on separate motorcycles when the accident occurred, Ron Killpack said.

Bruce Killpack was divorced. His children, Aaron, 19, and Melissa, 16, live with their mother in Missouri Valley. Killpack was born in Council Bluffs and grew up in the Beebeetown area, which is south of Logan, Iowa.

McFerrin's parents are divorced. His mother, Raynelle Kaszynski, lives in Omaha. McFerrin began working at Baker's stores in Omaha shortly after he graduated from high school and worked his way up to manager.

Sonny McFerrin said his son and daughter-in-law enjoyed living in Modale because it was quiet.

Funeral services for McFerrin will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Methodist Church of Missouri Valley.

In addition to his wife, father and mother, McFerrin is survived by a sister, Michelle Hatcher of Logan; grandparents, Carl and Frances Bohringer of Omaha and Ed and Helen McFerrin of Modale; five half brothers and half sisters; and a stepbrother.
