Harold Dunklau, 87, of Shelby Township, Mich., died June 5, 2001, of pneumonia and the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 12, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church north of Arlington. The Rev. Thomas Schmitt, the Rev. Rich Kanoy and the Rev. Evan Gaertner will officiate. Interment will be at St. Paul’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be held an hour before services at Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington.

Harold Dunklau was born October 22, 1913, in Arlington to Louis and Amelia (Gnuse) Dunklau. He grew up in Arlington, but spent his high school and college years at Concordia Teachers College in Seward, where he graduated in 1934. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education at Concordia in 1955 and received graduate credit at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He began his teaching career in 1934 at St. Paul’s Lutheran in Arlington. He moved on to teach in Champion; Leavenworth, Kan.; and Kansas City. He also served as school principal in Leavenworth and Kansas City.

He married Esther Hauer on June 30, 1946, in Leavenworth.

He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Macomb, Mich., at the time of his death. He also served his various congregations as the church organist, choir director, youth director, Vacation Bible School director, and Bible class teacher. He was a member of the board of control and St. Paul’s College in Concordia, Mo.; the board of directors of the Western District; chairman of the Western District Principal’s Conference; treasurer and then vice president of the Missouri District Teachers’ Conference; and a staff member at Lutheran Service Volunteer Encounters. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially fly fishing for trout.

He is survived by his wife, Esther, of Shelby Township, Mich.; one son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Linda Dunklau of Macomb, Mich.; two sisters, Ruth Harrie and Ada Seidler, both of Omaha; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Martin and Virginia Dunklau of Omaha and Rupert and Ruth Dunklau of Fremont; and two granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Ewald Dunklau.

Memorials are suggested to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and School in Arlington; Calvary Lutheran Church and School in Kansas City; or St. Peter Lutheran Church in Macomb, Mich.

The funeral for Harold H. Dunklau, 87, of Shelby Township, Mich., formerly of Arlington, will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church north of Arlington.

He died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Shelby Nursing Center in Shelby Township.

He was born Oct. 22, 1913, in rural Arlington. His education began at St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Arlington. His high school and college years were spent at Concordia Teachers College in Seward where he graduated in 1934. In 1955, he earned a bachelor of science degree in education at Concordia. He also earned graduate credit at the University of Missouri- Kansas City.

He began his teaching career in his home congregation, St. Paul’s Lutheran in 1934, teaching grades 1-4. His younger brother, Rupert, was one of his pupils. From 1935-38, he taught all grades at Immanuel Lutheran in Champion. In 1938, he accepted a call to teach at St. Paul Lutheran School in Leavenworth, Kan., where he served for 10 years. During those years, he taught grades 3 – 5 and grades 7 – 8. In 1944, he became teaching principal of the school. While at St. Paul Lutheran in Leavenworth, he married fellow teacher Esther Hauer on June 30, 1946.

In 1948, he accepted a call to become the founding principal and teacher of Calvary Lutheran School in Kansas City. The school started with 22 pupils in grades 1 – 3. By the time of his retirement in 1978, the school consisted of kindergarten through eighth grade with an enrollment of more than 200.

In 1963, the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge awarded him the Valley Forge Classroom Teachers Medal. In 1969, he received the Master Teacher Award from Concordia Teachers College in Seward. In 1989, he was bestowed the title of Principal Emeritus from Calvary Lutheran in Kansas City. The couple had resided in Shelby Township since 1999.

In addition to his teaching and administrative duties, he also served his various congregations including organist and choir director, youth director, Vacation Bible School director and Bible class teacher. He also served the church at large as a member of the Board of Control of St. Paul’s College in Concordia, Mo.; a member of the Board of Directors of the Western District; chairman of the Western District Principal’s Conference; treasurer and then vice president of the Missouri District Teachers’ Conference; and a staff member at Lutheran Service Volunteer Encounters.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Edward (and wife, Linda) Dunklau of Macomb, Mich.; two sisters, Ruth Harrie and Ada Seidler, both of Omaha; two brothers, Martin (and wife, Virginia) Dunklau of Omaha and Rupert (and wife, Ruth) Dunklau of Fremont and two granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by a brother.

The Rev. Thomas Schmitt of Zion Lutheran Church in Omaha, a former student of Dunklau’s, will officiate Tuesday’s service. Assisting will be the Rev. Rick Kanoy of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Arlington, a former member of Calvary Lutheran in Kansas City; and his grandson, the Rev. Evan Gaertner. Visitation is 7 – 9 p.m. Monday at Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington and continues one hour prior to service time at the church. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery in Arlington.

Memorials are suggested to Calvary Lutheran Church and School in Kansas City; St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and School in Arlington; and St. Peter Lutheran School and School in Macomb where he was a member at the time of his death.
