C. A. CARTER DIES IN TRAIN MISHAP

LAST OF WALTER CARTER FAMILY IS KILLED IN ARKANSAS TRAGEDY

C. A. Carter, 52, former Blairite and last surviving member of the Walter Carter family, once well-known here, was killed early last Wednesday morning when he fell beneath the wheels of a train in the McGehee, Arkansas railroad yards, Mrs. E. C. Lippincott has learned. Mr. Carter had been a railroad man since 1916.

It is believed Carter was killed when he fell from the rear of an auxiliary water car which was attached to the engine of a freight train which was being made up at the time for a run to Memphis.

The engine was backing up to be connected with the remainder of the train when it passed over Carter’s body after he fell.

It is also thought possible that a switch engine and several cars passed over the body. Badly mangled, the body was discovered by a member of the switching crew.

Mr. Carter entered the railroad service September 14, 1916, after he had left Blair. He was out of the service for some time and had gone back to work for the Missouri Pacific last February.

Surviving him are his wife; two sons, Walter and Alex Carter of McGehee, and two daughters, Miss Louis Carter of McGehee and Mrs. Joe Shelton of Forrest City, Arkansas. Funeral services for Mr. Carter were held late last Wednesday afternoon with burial in a cemetery near there.

Mr. Carter visited Blair frequently in past years, the last time being a year ago when he came here to attend the funeral of his mother, Mrs. Emma Hoover.
