Virginia M. Dunklau, 90, of Omaha, died Friday, Sept. 2, 2005 at Edgewood Vista Senior Living in Omaha.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Pacific Hills Lutheran Church in Omaha. Interment was at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Virginia Marie (McDowell) Dunklau was born April 1, 1915, in Hardy to George and Teresa (Hempel) McDowell. She graduated from Hardy High School in 1932. At 17, she began her teaching career in an eight-grade rural elementary school. After two years of teaching, she enrolled in Teachers College at the University of Nebraska. An accomplished musician, she gave violin lessons and achieved the rank of Concertmistress of the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra. She earned a bachelor of science in education degree in 1938.

She met her future husband, Martin, while both were teaching in Superior and they were married June 9, 1940, in Hardy.

Mrs. Dunklau taught until 1960. During that time, she continued her own schooling, earning a master of education degree in 1966. After retirement, the Dunklaus enjoyed winters in their second home in Harlingen, Texas.

Her interests included gardening, playing bridge, researching genealogy, and music. She was an active member of the National Home Gardening Club (charter member), and Federated Garden Clubs of Nebraska; Lioness Club of Omaha; Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity and Phi Delta Gamma, Colonial Dames, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War (state president in 1983).

She is survived by her husband, Martin; children, Martin W. “Bill” and Brenda Dunklau of Dallas, Texas; Patricia and Neil Clark of Bloomfield, Conn.; Alan Dunklau of Omaha; and Douglas and Janet Dunklau of Olathe, Kan.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the Hardy Alumni Association; Daughters of the Union Veterans; or Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity. Moser Funeral Home in Fremont was in charge of arrangements.

Funeral Service 11 AM, Tuesday, Pacific Hills Lutheran Church, 90th and Pacific, Omaha. Visitation, Monday, 1 – 8 PM with family receiving friends 6 – 8 PM at Heafey Heafey Hoffman Dworak & Cutler West Center Chapel, 7805 West Center, Omaha.
