Phillips, Martha J.

Mrs. Martha Phillips died at her home in east Blair at 5:30 this morning of old age and the funeral service will likely be held at the Baptist church Friday afternoon. Martha J. Martin was born in Rush county, Ind., April 11th, 1840, and would therefore have been 79 years of age had she lived a few weeks longer. She came to this county in the spring of 1868 and this has been her home ever since. She was married here to Charles E. Phillips July 18th, 1872 and five children were born to them, but three of whom are now living, Allen and Eva Phillips and Mrs. Mary Pate, of this city. One child died in infancy and Clara died in 1902. Mr. Phillips died Feb. 4th, 1890. Mrs. Phillips had been a member of the Baptist church since she was 12 years and helped organize the first Sunday School ever organized in Blair, being one of those who met on the old depot platform for this purpose and the school was held in a box car nearby. She was a good wife and mother and will be greatly missed by many old and tried friends.
