Mr. Bates was born Dec. 14, 1868, in Washington Co., Va., and moved to this county with his parents in 1879. He had suffered with diabetes for over a year. He was respected by all that knew him; he always had a good word for everybody.

He leaves his aged father, three sisters and four brothers to mourn his death. Funeral services were held at the home of George Robertson on Wednesday at 2 o'clock p.m.

Note: John was buried in Block 5 in the Kennard Cemetery. The lot and space is unknown.
