HERMAN DOSTAL, 87

Herman Dostal, 87, of Howells, died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, at Parkview Home in Dodge.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Sept. 21, 2009, at the S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Howells. Interment was in the S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery.

Herman Dostal was born April 27, 1922, in the Howells area to Adolph and Rose (Nykodem) Dostal. He attended rural school in the Tabor area and helped run the farm after his father died.

He married Arlene Dirkschneider on Oct. 23, 1945, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Olean.

He farmed until 1960 when he purchased the bowling alley in Howells and operated it until 1967. He then worked as a salesman for Pimper Garage and then worked at Pekarek Farm Supply as a truck driver. He also drove the Howells school bus and sold Dekalb seed corn.

Mr. Dostal was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was an avid sports fan of high school sports, college football and volleyball and enjoyed working in his vegetable garden.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene of Howells; three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Bob Limbach of Blair, Karen and Mike Baumert of Omaha, and Judy and Marc Taylor of Cecil, Wis.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn and Mary Dostal of Omaha, and Dave and Connie Dostal of Howells; 12 grandchildren and spouses; four great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Angie Dvorak of Howells and Marie Scribner of Fremont.

Herman was preceded in death by a son, Brian, who died in infancy; three brothers, Leonard, Raymond and Adolph; four sisters, Vlasta Cakl, Mildred Mares, Emma Thiem and Libbie Vlach.

Svoboda Funeral Home of Schuyler was in charge of arrangements.
