VELMA L. DOWLING, 70

Services for Velma L. Dowling, 70 of Arlington who died October 27, 1993 at A. J. Merrick Manor in Fremont were Saturday, October 30 at First United Methodist Church in Fremont. Dr. Thomas Martin officiated.

A second service was held at the First United Methodist Church in Randolph Monday, November 1. Rev. Marvin Coffey officiated at that service. Burial was in the Randolph Cemetery at Randolph, Nebraska.

Velma L. Dowling was born June 29, 1923 in rural Coleridge, Nebraska. She was raised and attended country school near Coleridge, but moved to the Randolph area as a child. She graduated from Randolph High School in 1942.

After graduation, she worked as a nanny in Texas, Florida and Pennsylvania.

She married Norton Dowling at Randolph January 18, 1947. Following her marriage, the couple farmed in the Randolph area. They moved to Bennett, Nebraska in 1971 and to Waverly in 1976. They moved to Arlington in 1982.

She was a cook at the Garden Café in Lincoln and also at Marcie’s Café in Fremont from 1982 until retiring in February, 1991. She also baked wedding cakes commercially for 15 years.

She was a former member of First United Methodist Church in Randolph; a former member and past president of the Women’s society of the church and a Sunday School teacher there for many years. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary at Randolph and a member of First United Methodist Church in Fremont.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Nina Caster Cunningham; an infant son, Richard and a sister, Aulda Cunningham.

She is survived by her husband, Norton; sons, Junior Norton of Onida, South Dakota; Roger and Bryan, both of Arlington; daughters, Patricia Auch of Arlington; Connie (Mrs. Wayne) Hummel of Fremont and Joan (Mrs. Edward) Ennen of Highland, Texas; two brothers, Boyd Cunningham of Wausa, Nebraska and Dale Cunningham of Randolph; ten sisters, Vera (Mrs. Richard) Remington; Leila (Mrs. LeRoy) Brummels; Irma (Mrs. Clarence) Remington; Helen Burgel and Wilma Wilkerson, all of Randolph; Eva (Mrs. James) Dowling of Wilder, Idaho; Flo (Mrs. Paul) Lenzen of Laurel; Doris (Mrs. William) Dowling of Hastings; Audrey (Mrs. George) Henrich of Dixon and Alice (Mrs. John) Moehlenhoff of Creighton; 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Chad Dowling, Bradley Dowling, Dwaine Hummel, Kristopher Auch, Kelley Auch, Patrick Ennen, Kenneth Ennen, Cory Freudenthal and Mark Miller.

Debbie Dowling was soloist, Barb Johnson and Carolyn Lackas were organists.

Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington was in charge of arrangements.
