RUTH E. DOWNS, 90

Ruth E. Downs, 90, of South Sioux City, died Sunday, July 9, 2000, at a Sioux City, Iowa hospital.

Services were held Thursday, July 13, 2000, at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Nancy Tomlinson officiating. Interment was in the Onawa, Iowa, City Cemetery.

Ruth Downs was born Oct. 7, 1909, in Hamburg, Iowa, to Edwin H. and Martha (Pfeiffer) Woerner.

On Feb. 14, 1934, she married Samuel H. Downs in Onawa. The couple lived in Onawa until 1969, then moved to South Sioux City. She was employed at the bank in Onawa and was a bookkeeper and secretary at Hobart Sales and Service in Sioux City.

She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in South Sioux City. She was a former member of the United Methodist Church in Onawa and was active in the Women’s Group. She was awarded the U.M.W. Service Award. She was a former member of the White Shrine Auxiliary.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Samuel H. Jr. and Yvonne Downs; and a son, Gerald E. Downs, all of South Sioux City; two daughters and sons-in-law, Clarine M. and Jacob Henkel of Aurelia, Iowa and R. Elaine and Harold Hadden of LeMars, Iowa; a sister, Ada Mae Batho of Roswell, N.M.; a sister-in-law, Leona Hodgen; a nephew, Bob Batho; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City was in charge of arrangements.
