Helen L (Shafer) Burgess

#1 Mrs. Helen Burgess passed away at 10:30 Monday night at Kennard after an illness of one day's duration. As Helen Schafer, she was born in Michigan,* Dec. 8, 1865. In the early '70s she, with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Christoffer Schafer, moved to Nebraska and lived for a time in Blair before moving to a homestead about five miles north and west of Kennard. For the past 42 years she has resided in Kennard.

She was united in marriage to John B. Burgess on Nov. 6, 1884, and to this union five children were born all of whom survive her, the husband passing away a number of years ago. She was a member of the Kennard Methodist Church and of the ladies aid society for more than thirty years.

Surviving her are two sons, William C., and John A. Burgess, both of Omaha; three daughters, Mrs. Mertie Horn, Pueblo, Colo., Mrs. Etta Fairchild and Mrs. Opie Konvalin of Kennard; two brothers, Robert Schafer, Kalispel, Montana, and Frank Schafer of Blair; one sister, Mrs. Alma Thomas, Tekamah; eight grandchildren and a host of other relatives and scores of friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Kennard Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. today.

Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Burgess who passed away on Monday night of last week were held at the Methodist Church Thursday afternoon Rev. Bocher officiating. Mrs. Harland French, Miss Viola Kingdon, Lester Kronberg and Earl Jenkins sang "Above the Bright Blue," accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Earl Jenkins . Many beautiful flowers covered the casket and alter offerings to the grief stricken children, brothers and sister the sympathy of friends and relatives.

Interment was made in the Kennard Cemetery by the side of her husband.

KENNARD WOMAN ILLNESS VICTIM

Mrs. Helen Burgess, 65, widow of John B. Burgess, died late Monday evening at her home in Kennard. Mrs. Burgess, who was a pioneer resident of this community, had been ill only one day prior to her death. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at two o’clock from the Kennard Methodist church.

Mrs. Burgess, formerly Miss Helen Schafer, was born in Michigan December 8, 1865, and came to Washington county with her parents in the early ’70’s. The family lived at Blair for a short time and then homesteaded five miles northwest of Kennard. She was married to John B. Burgess November 6, 1884, and has lived in Kennard since her marriage.

The husband died many years ago and the following children survive the mother: William C. and John A., both of Omaha, Mrs. Mertie Horn of Pueblo, Colo.; Mrs. Etta Fairchild and Mrs. Opie Komcalim, both of Kennard. Two brothers, Robert Schafer of Montana and Frank Schafer of Blair, and one sister, Mrs. Alma Thomas of Tekamah also survive as do eight grandchildren.

Mrs. Burgess had been a member of the Kennard Methodist church and of the Ladies Aid society of that church for 30 years.
