Kin of Joshua Seefus mourn loss of young outdoorsman.

Joshua J. Seefus was remembered Saturday as an outgoing boy who loved the outdoors.

“He loved to fish and hunt,” said his aunt, Lori Seefus. “He would fish every day if he could.”

Joshua, 16, of Fort Calhoun, Neb., died Friday following a traffic accident.

Lori Seefus said Joshua had his driver’s license for only two days—something he was so excited about.

“We are just absolutely devastated, “ she said. “We will miss him so much.”

Joshua was driving a Chevrolet pickup south on County Road northwest of Fort Calhoun when he lost control of the vehicle. The truck went into the east ditch and rolled, the Washington County Sheriff’s office said.

Joshua, who was not using a seat belt, was ejected from the pickup. A helicopter took him to the Nebraska Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Lori Seefus said grief counseling has been set up at Fort Calhoun High School, where Josh would have been a junior this fall.

“He had a lot of friends,” she said. “He was very well liked by his peers. It’s been very difficult for everyone.”

Josh competed in football, basketball and track for Fort Calhoun. He was involved in summer football and basketball camps and lifted weights in the off-season.

He had a passion for the outdoors.

He took a fishing trip to Canada last year with his uncles and cousins, and was looking forward to more.

“It’s such a loss for us and our community,” Lori Seefus said.

Joshua is survived by his parents, Larry and Casey Seefus, and brothers, Larry, 19, Hunter, 8, and Cody, 3.

He is also survived by his grandparents Larry and Janice Seefus, grandmother Jean Springer and several uncles, aunts and cousins.

To help with funeral expenses, the family has set up the Joshua Seefus Memorial Trust at Great Southern Bank.

Funeral arrangements were pending through the Sievers-Sprick Funeral Home in Fort Calhoun.
