Mrs. Service Passes Away at Crowell Memorial Home

Mrs. Samuel Service died at Crowell Memorial Home on Thursday, August 9, 1923, after a lingering illness, aged 86 years, 9 months and 18 days.

Maria Waite was born in Ottowa, Canada, October 21, 1836, and came to the United States in early childhood and settled in New York, where she grew to womanhood and in 1856 she was married to Samuel Service. To this marriage ten children were born, three boys and seven girls, three of whom, Lottie, now Mrs. Richard Crampton, of Yakima, Wash.; Matilda, now Mrs. E.K. Weekley, of Fremont, Nebr., and Mrs. Harriett Barnett of Omaha, survive both father and mother, the father having died in Omaha seven years ago.

The deceased moved from New York to Decatur, Mich., and finally came to Washington county, Nebraska in 1888. Mrs. Service came to Crowell Memorial Home two years ago. She has been a Christian all her life, first in the Episcopal church and then in the Methodist church. She has suffered much during the last years of her life.

The funeral was held at Crowell Home Sunday afternoon, Rev. J.A. Johnson preaching the sermon. A quartette composed of Miss Gertrude Mead, Mrs. Annie Martin and the Messrs. F.W. Arndt and D.C. VanDeusen sang a couple of favorite selections with Mrs. Underwood at the piano. Burial was made in the Blair cemetery by the side of her husband.

A good woman has gone to her reward.
