Samuel Service is Dead

Octogenarian Kindly Remembered by Many Blair Friends

Word came to Blair Tuesday that “Uncle Sammy” Service had died at his home in Omaha on Monday night at the advanced age of 86 years. Deceased was a resident of Blair for a number of years and had many friends here. Only a few weeks ago he visited here and met a hearty welcome. He was a native of Ireland. His aged wife survives. They were members of the Presbyterian church during their residence in Blair and the remains were brought here on Thursday and funeral services were held at that church and burial made in the Blair cemetery.

The remains of Samuel Service were brought up from Omaha Thursday morning in an auto hearse and taken direct to the Presbyterian church where the funeral was held at 11 o’clock, the Rev. A.J. McCleary, of the Benson Presbyterian church, officiating. He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harriett Barnett in Omaha on Tuesday, Oct. 10. Mr. Service was born in Antrim county, Ireland, March 4th, 1830, and was therefore past 86 years of age. He came to this country when he was 21 years of age and settled in New York, where he was married to Maria Waite Oct. 2nd, 1856, and they lived happily together for over 60 years. Ten children were born to them, three of whom survive him, with the aged widow. Mrs. Lettie Crampton, of North Yakima, Washington; Mrs. Tilla Romans, of Fremont, and Mrs. Harriett Barnett, of Omaha. Mr. Service came to Blair in 1888 and made this his home until about nine years ago, when he went to make his home with his daughter in Omaha.
