Marvin W. “Dobby” Sexton, 91

Marvin W. “Dobby” Sexton, 91, of Fremont, formerly of Nickerson, died July 3, 1998, at Merrick Manor in Fremont.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, at the First United Methodist Church in Fremont with Rev. Eugene Watson and Rev. Brian Kottas officiating.

Burial will be in the Hooper Cemetery.

Visitation was scheduled until 9 p.m. Monday, July 6, at Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will also be at the church Tuesday, July 7, for an hour before the service.

Marvin W. “Dobby” Sexton was born Jan. 31, 1907 in Nickerson. He grew up and was educated in Nickerson.

On Sept. 27, 1930, he married Virginia Bailey in Grand Island. They lived in Nickerson and operated a general store for 20 years.

He was also the postmaster in Nickerson from 1951 to 1977. He served as State President of the National League of Postmasters in 1957-58. He was named State Postmaster of the Year in 1956, as well as National Postmaster of the Year in 1956. He served as the group’s regional coordinator in 1959-60.

He led many community projects in Nickerson. He was president of the Nebraska Volunteer Fire Fighters Association in 1956. He served as Nickerson’s fire chief for 25 years, having helped establish the fire department in 1939. He had been a member of the committee to establish and promote state fire schools. He was the civil defense director in 1952 and local chairman of the Red Cross in 1961.

He was a member of the Lion’s Club and Past Noble Master of the Odd Fellows Lodge.

His membership in the Nickerson Methodist Church and the First United Methodist Church of Fremont totaled 75 years. He served on many church boards and committees including work for Camp Fontanelle.

He served on the board of directors of the May Museum. He served on the Dodge County Disaster Committee.

He was a member of the Fremont Eagles Aerie 200, Dodge County Old Timers Baseball Association and had been a member of DeMolay more than 50 years.

He is survived by one daughter and her husband, Marcella and Dale Hansen of Fremont; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Phyllis Badger of Denver, Colo.; two brothers and their wives, Maurice and Gladys Sexton of MaMesa, Calif.; and Robert and Karen Sexton of Durango, Colo.; and one aunt, Anona Johnson of Fremont.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, who died in June of 1992.

Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church and to the Fremont Area Medical Center Foundation.
