Rodney E. Austin, 66, of Omaha, died Saturday, March 1, 2014, at his home.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 4117 Terrace Drive, in Omaha. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home in Blair. A graveside service will be 2:30 p.m.,Wednesday in the Blair Cemetery.

Rodney E. Austin was born Dec. 20, 1947, in Kearney to Edward Wilson and Helen Irene (Tabor) Austin. He graduated from Kearney High School in 1966 and the University of Nebraska Kearney in 1970.

While serving his country in the U.S. Army, he was stationed in Seoul, Korea, working in the Military Intelligence Division. After his stint in the military, he finished his education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He graduated with a master’s degree in public administration in 1976.

In 1975, he became the city clerk/treasurer for the City of La Vista. In 1985, he joined the City of Omaha as city council staff assistant, where he remained until his death. He loved his job and those he worked with.

Mr. Austin enjoyed working in his yard, planting flowers, planting trees and landscaping.

The love of his life was spending time with his grandchildren. Whatever they were involved in he would be there whenever he could.

He also had a love for baseball, the fine arts and reading.

He is survived by his wife, Carla Austin; stepdaughter Kim (David) Neumann; stepson Steven (Starla) Paulsen; brother Greg (Gay) Austin; sister-in-law Irene Austin; eight grandchildren: Benjamin, Adam, Tony and Jocelynn Neumann and Sydney, Austin, Hunter and Brooklynn Slie; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. All will miss his presence in their lives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Marie (Paulsen) Austin; brother Stan Austin; sister Clarice Kreps; and stepmother Ardis Austin.

Memorials may be directed to scholarships for public administration students at the University of Nebraska Omaha.
