Elias Shapnek, 82

Elias Shapnek, 82, of Glenville, NY, died March 29, 2003, at the Baptist Health and Rehabilitation Center in Scotia, NY following a long illness.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, April 4, at Glenville Funeral Home; interment was in the Gerald B.H.Solomon National Cemetery in Schuylerville.

Elias Shapnek was born Aug. 31, 1920, in Lackawanna, NY to Michael and Aniela Shupienek.

His early years were spent in Amsterdam and Galway, where he graduated in 1937 from Galway High School.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946.

On Nov. 6, 1943, he was married to Isabel M. Flynn of Blair.

After the war, he graduated from Siena College and from Albany Law School with a juris doctorate degree in 1956.

He was employed by the State of New York as an attorney from 1961 until 1983, retiring from the Department of Dental Hygiene in that year.

He worked as a volunteer for the NYS Legislative Council as a representative, serving on the task force for AARP. He was a former district No. 6 committeeman in 1987, and was a long-time communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Scotia.

He is survived by his beloved wife of more than 50 years, Isabel; daughters and sons-in-law, Sharyl and Walter Duprey, Nancy and Walter Lytwyn, and Joy and Patrick Egan; brother, Walter M. Shapnek of Glenville; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Ruth Lippincott, and brothers-in-law, Adrian, Tom and Eugene Flynn, all of Blair.
