Howard Pilcher

Services for Howard Pilcher of Omaha and formerly of Fort Calhoun who died December 29, 1995 at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha of diabetes-related complications were Tuesday, January 3, 1996 at Boyd E. Braman Mortuary in Omaha.

Howard Pilcher was born in Sioux City, Iowa and attended Indian schools in Wahpeton, North Dakota and Lawrence, Kansas. He served in the Army in the early 1950’s in Germany.

In 1979, he and his wife, Allene opened their first store in South Sioux City, Nebraska, selling craft supplies for Indians on the reservations in the area. They owned and operated Pilcher’s Indian Store, located in southwest Omaha and formerly located in Fort Calhoun and several other locations in the Omaha area.

He was, by his account, descended from one of the Nebraska Territory’s earliest Indian traders. His great-great-grandfather, Joshua Pilcher, established a trading post in Bellevue, he had said.

He is survived by his wife, M. Allene; a daughter, Mary Friesell and grandchildren, Laura, Jeremy and Adam.
