PAPILLION MAN KILLED AS CAR CRASHED INTO BRIDGE

A 19 year old Papillion man, Kenneth M. Cherney, was killed when his auto crashed into the abutment of a bridge on Highway 73 just south of Herman early Wednesday morning, March 8th. Washington County Sheriff’s deputy, Jim Phillips, reported that the Tekamah Rescue Squad was called and Cherney was dead on arrival at the Blair Memorial Community Hospital.

Kenneth Cherney had been in Herman visiting friends and relatives. Cherney is the grandson of Floyd Ricker of Herman. Cherney had just left to return to Papillion when his auto hit the second bridge south of Herman on the west side of Highway 73 at 12:07 a.m.

Cherney was thrown from his auto. A semi-truck, approaching the scene, could not stop and had to straddle the victim who was lying on the pavement.

Kenneth was a student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and worked part-time at Sears in the Southroads. When he had spare time he liked to drive to Herman and help his uncle, Ray Ricker, in his repair shop in Herman.

Kenneth is survived by two brothers, Larry and Steven, and his father, Edmond, of Papillion. His mother, the former Pauline Ricker, passed away in 1968. Bob Ricker, of Blair, is also an uncle.
