Gerald J. “Jack” Bassett Sr., 75, of Ames died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, at his home.

He was born Nov. 13, 1937 at Humphrey to Gerald and Georgina (Billings) Bassett. Jack married Marilyn Sutherland on Nov. 22, 1958 in Waterloo, Iowa. He served in the U. S. Navy. Jack lived in Spalding, Waterloo, Iowa, and Blair until moving to Fremont. He was an over-the-road truck driver for many years, until retiring in 2004.

He was active in Boy Scouts.

Survivors include: his wife, Marilyn; sons, John Bassett of Ames; and Jay (and wife, Dawn) Bassett of Fremont; daughter, Linda Bassett of Fremont; brother, Squire (and wife, Marilyn) Bassett of Fremont; sister, Ruby Peterson of Omaha; sister-in-law, Maxine Bassett of Omaha; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother.

The memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont with the Rev. Scott Jensen, chaplain of Fremont Area Medical Center, officiating. There is no visitation.

Memorials may be directed to the family for a charity yet to be named.
