Howard Edward Smith, 96, of Blair, died Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at Memorial Community Hospital after a short illness.

A Memorial service will be scheduled for a future date.

Howard Edward Smith was born Oct. 30, 1917, in Exeter, Mo., to Major A. and Carrie Jane (Neeley) Smith.

He married Mary Hope Anderson Oct. 25, 1942, in Moran, Kan.

They lived for many years in Emporia and Topeka, Kan. He worked for several newspapersas a linotype operator.

He moved to Elkhorn and then to Blair to live with his daughter, Diane.

He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law: Gregory and Trina of Boca Raton, Fla., and Alan and Louise, of Mount Eliza, Australia; daughter and son-in-law: Anita Diane Birrell and James of Blair; grandchildren: Edward Smith, Kathryn Smith, Rochelle (Doug) Ryden-Campbell, Matthew Birrell; and great-granddaughters Kaylee Murdock and Shawn Campbell.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Mary Hope; his parents; brothers Charles and Major; and sisters Nola Patterson and Faye Williams.

Passed away after a short illness at Memorial Community Hosptial in Blair. Born in Exeter, MO to Major A. and Carrie Jane (Neeley) Smith. Married Mary Hope Anderson October 25, 1942 in Moran, KS.
