Townships of Washington County, Nebraska.

Washington County has two types of townships:
  • Civil Townships. Civil townships are a form of local government, but with boundary lines that are not set in stone. Some civil townships are made up of all or portions of several survey townships. Municipalities can incorporate or annex land in a township, which is then generally removed from the civil township government.

In Washington County, there are 7 civil townships that can change boundary lines every ten years based upon population.

  • Survey Townships. Survey townships, sometimes called Congressional townships or precincts, as used by the United States Public Land Survey System, refers to a square unit of land that is usually six miles on a side. Each 36 square mile township is divided into 36 one-square mile sections, that can be further subdivided for sale, and each section covers exactly 640 acres. To be more precise, the subdivisions of a section are frequently the quarter-section (160 acres) and the quarter-quarter section (40 acres). Some survey townships are designated to take up range lines. Irregular townships with fewer than 36 sections have been created to correct for survey errors and the Earth's curvature.

In Washington County, there are 13 survey townships. In early census reports, survey townships were used (in the early days of Washington County civil and survey townships were synonymous).
