Chester Leroy Hovendick, 89 died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at the Tekamah Nursing Center.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Herman Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Herman Cemetery.

Masonic and prayer services will be 6 p.m. Friday at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home.

Mr. Hovendick was born April 10, 1908, to Charles and Leora (Fletcher) Hovendick at their farm home in the New England community west of Herman. The family moved to a farm a few miles north in Burt County where he would later farm. He received his elementary schooling at the Crawford School. On Jan. 2, 1929, he married Dorothy Montgomery at Red Oak, Iowa. He retired from farming in December 1969 and moved to Blair, where he resided until January 1997, when he moved to the Tekamah Nursing Center because of failing health.

He was a member of the Herman Baptist Church, of the Herman Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, a past board member of the District No. 42 School Board and a past board member of the Herman Federated Church in Herman.

Survivors are two daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Dwain Jordan, Herman; and Ione and Omar Kauffeld, Garfield, Ark; three grandchildren, Renee Reed-Curl, Greg Jordan and Kent Jordan; six great-grandchildren, Randy Mastin, Amy Mastin, Brad Jordan, Amanda, Jordan, Kyle Jordan, and Elizabeth Jordan; two step-grandchildren, Karen Kauffeld and Keith Kauffeld; two brothers, Vernon Hovendick and Howard Hovendick and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dorothy in October 1986; and one brother, Lester Hovendick.
