Marjorie Opal Hovendick, 87, of Tekamah died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at the Tekamah Health and Rehab Center.

Services were Tuesday, Feb. 23, at First Baptist Church in Tekamah with the Rev. Steven P. Eggum officiating. Burial was in the Herman Cemetery.

Casketbeareres were Michael Hovendick, Mitchell Hovendick, Timothy Hovendick, Brian Wood, and Kevin Candee, Jack Hovendick and John Hovendick.

Honorary Casketbeareres were Susie (Hovendick) Chan, Barbara Candee, Karen Hovendick, Jane Wood, Anthony Chan, Rose Hovendick and Sharon Hovendick.

The vocalist was Cliff Morrow. Organist was Juli Morrow.

Marjorie Opal Hovendick was born July 13, 1911, in Presho, S.D., to Floyd R, and Clara (Osborn) Corkill.

Her family moved to Bancroft and then Tekamah where she graduated from Tekamah High School in 1929.

She attended Midland College in Fremont and worked in Lincoln at the state capitol.

On Dec. 28, 1932, she married C. Vernon Hovendick at her parent’s home in Tekamah.

The couple lived on a farm west of Herman and had two children, James V. and Lois. In 1981, they moved to Tekamah.

She was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church in Tekamah, teaching kindergarten Sunday School class for more than 50 years.

She was active in the church’s women’s group and choir. She served for many years as the recording secretary and Deaconess.

The 50-year member of the Herman Chapter or the Order of Eastern Star No. 216, she served in several offices. She was also a 4-H leader for many years.

She enjoyed cooking, sewing and caring for her family. While living on the farm, she tended to a large vegetable and flower garden.

A big Nebraska Cornhusker fan, she never missed watching a game on TV or listening on the radio. The sports page was the first section of the Omaha World Herald she read.

She is survived by her husband C. Vernon Hovendick of Tekamah; son and daughter-in-law, James and Arlene Hovendick of Friendswood Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Lois and James Wood of Fontanelle, Iowa; seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren;; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Don Youngsworth of Las Vegas, Nev., and Julia Jean and Dick Boer of Camas, Wash.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lawrence and Ellen Corkill of Lake Oswego, Ore., Jim and Pat Corkill of Long View, Wash.; brother-in-law, Howard Hovendick of Tekamah; sister-in-law, Eileen Corkill of Astoria, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Clara Osborn Corkill, who died in the 1918 flu epidemic; father, Floyd, and a wife, Lucy; brother, Don; sister-in-law, Fae Hovendick; brother-in-law, Lester Hovendick and wife, Mabel.

Hamel-Peck-Pelan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
