R. P. Flynn, Longtime Dairyman Dies

Mr. Richard P. Flynn, 84 year old dairy farmer, died at the Blair Community Hospital on July 8th. He had been suffering from cancer for many years.

He was born at Fort Omaha on February 16, 1885, to Sgt. And Mrs. Richard Flynn. On April 7, 1908, he was married to Ruth Harris and they made their home at Ord, Nebraska.

They moved to Blair in January of 1931. Mr. Flynn was the founder of the Flynn Field Farm at Blair. He had a great interest in developing better dairying and better dairy cattle. He was a lifetime member of the National Holstein-Friesian Association of America. In 1961, he was a recipient of the Ak-Sar-Ben Agricultural Achievement Award for recognition of Dairy Leadership in Nebraska. In 1963 he received a fifty-year Pioneer Shipper award from the Omaha Livestock Association.

For many years, Mr. Flynn served on the Official Board of the First Methodist Church and throughout the years has been an active member of the church.

Mr. and Mrs. Flynn were the parents of eight children. A son, 1st Lt. Robert Kelly Flynn, was a World War II casualty. Survivors are his wife Ruth; four sons, Richard H. of Fremont, Thomas, Adrian and Eugene of Blair; three daughters, Mrs. R. J. Lippincott (Ruth) of Blair, Mrs. R. B. Phillips (Margaret) of Ft. Worth, Texas, Mrs. Eli Shapnel (Isabel) of Scotia, New York. There are 28 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mr. Flynn was one of a family of ten children. Two brothers and two sisters survive.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 11th at 2 P.M. at the First United Church in Blair. The Campbell Mortuary is in charge of arrangements and burial will be in the Blair Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be nine nephews: Merle Flynn, James B. Flynn, Lyle Flynn, Emanuel Vodehnal, Tony Cummins, Van Page, Cecil Knapp, Ray Knapp and Les Leonard.

The family suggests memorials to the Cancer Association.
