28 Sept., 1903 - The Pilot - Mattie Francis

After a brief, but very painful illness, Miss Mattie Francis died at 3 o’clock Saturday morning from the effects of an operation for appendicitis. The disease was acute from the beginning, and when she was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital in Omaha the surgeons were obliged to wait several days for the inflammation to be sufficiently allayed to make the operation possible. It was finally performed successfully, and at first the patient gave every evidence of a speedy recovery, but on Wednesday peritonitis developed which was the immediate cause of her death. The body was brought to Arlington Saturday afternoon, and the funeral was conducted from the English M. E. church on Sunday morning. The church was well filled by friends who gathered to pay their last tribute of sympathy for the sorrowing relatives and to give a sad expression of their esteem for the dead. The funeral sermon was delivered by the pastor, Rev. G. M. Couffer, and the body was laid to rest in the Arlington cemetery. The deceased had always claimed Arlington as her home, she having been born here twenty two years ago and, with the exception of a short time, always resided here. During this time she had become known to local residents as one whose gentle womanliness and sterling character had earned for her a large circle of friends. Those who knew her best were unbounded in their praise of her as one of the choicest of Arlington’s daughters. Something over a year ago she became a member of the M. E. church and remained such to the time of her death. During that time she had been faithful in her adherence to the organization and by faithful Christian living had earned the “Well done” of the Master. Those who were in touch with her life will miss her sorely and to them the sympathy of the entire community is extended.
