John Compton, Sr., died at his home south of town 8 o’clock this morning from hardening of the arteries. He had been failing for several months but had strength enough yesterday to climb up in the hay mow and thrown down hay for his horse. The end came very suddenly this morning without a struggle. The funeral will be held at the house at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon, Rev. Eldred Marsh, of Marshalltown, Ia., officiating. Deceased was born near Wheelersburg, Ohio, March 5th, 1842, and was therefore past 76 years of age. He was married there to Melinda Boston and three children were born to them, Mrs. Frank McManigal, of this city, Charles, of near Herman and Perch of this city. They came to Nebraska in 1868 and after a short time spent in DeSoto they settled on homestead five miles northwest of Blair, where Mrs. Compton died. He was remarried to Miss Nancy Boyce in this city November 15th, 1870, and eight children were born to them, Mrs. Jess McManigal, who lives near Lyons, Mrs. Harry Ervey, of Blair Township, A. A. of this city, John M. who lives just north of Blair, Mrs. Ben F. Peck, Mrs. Robt. Lemon and Carl, all of Lyons, and Mrs. Louie Lund, of Casper, Wyo. In his long life in this community Mr. Compton proved himself a kind husband and father, a true friend and neighbor and therefore a good citizen who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

JOHN COMPTON, SR., CROSSES GREAT DIVIDE

After an illness covering several weeks, John Compton, Sr., passed to the Great Beyond at 9 a.m. Wednesday of hardening of the arteries.

Mr. Compton was born at Wheelersburg, Ohio, March 5, 1842, and was 76 years, 8 months and 8 days old at the time of his death. He was twice married and the children by the former marriage were Mrs. Frank McManigal of Blair, Charles, who lives on a farm near Herman, and Perch, also a farmer near Blair.

The children of the latter marriage are Mrs. Jesse McManigal of Lyons, Mrs. Harry Ervey near Blair, A.A. Compton of Blair, Mrs. Ben Peck, Mrs. Robert Lemon and Carl Compton, all residing at Lyons, and Mrs. Louis Lund of Casper, Wyo.

Deceased had been engaged in farming for many years and was a most highly respected man. The funeral will be held Friday at the farm home south of this city, conducted by an old time friend, Rev. Eldred Marsh of Marshaltown, Iowa, at 2 o'clock.

The not unexpected death of John Compton, Sr., occurred at the family home just south of the city limits on last Wednesday at 9 o'clock a.m., aged 76 years. He had been in feeble health for several months afflicted with hardening of the arteries, that fatal disease incident to old age.

Deceased was a native of Ohio, coming to this county fifty years ago, and had resided here continuously since. He had been twice married, his first wife dying many years ago, leaving two sons, Charles and Perch, and one daughter, Mrs. Frank McManigal, all residents of this county. He later married Nancy Boyce and eight children were born to them, three sons, A.A. (Fred) of this city, John M., living north of Blair, and Carl, at Lyons, and five daughters, Mrs. Harry Ervey, Mrs. Jess McManigal, Mrs. Ben Peck, of this county, Mrs. Richard Lemon, of Lyons, and Mrs. Louie Lund, of Casper, Wyoming.

John A. Compton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Compton, was born in Wheelersburg, Ohio, March 5, 1842. He was married to Melinda Bostoff in 1862. Three children were born to them. In 1868 Mr. and Mrs. Compton came to Nebraska residing for a short time at DeSoto, where Mrs. Compton died. He then homesteaded a farm five miles northwest of Blair. On Nov. 15th, 1870, he married Miss Nancy Boyce, who with eight of the nine children born to them, together with the three children of his former marriage, survive him. The children are Mrs. Frank McManigal, Mrs. Harry Ervey, C.E., A.P., J.M. and A.A. Compton of Blair, Mrs. Jess McManigal, Mrs. Ben Peck, Mrs. Robert Lemon, and Carl Compton, of Lyons, and Mrs. Louie Lund, of Casper, Wyo. He is also survived by twenty-four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Compton was baptized by Elder Almus Adams and for more than a quarter of a century has continued a faithful communicant of the Church of God. His long life spent in the locality where his death occurred won the respect and confidence of many friends. Several months of constantly failing health culminated in death on November 13th, 1918, and after a life of more than 76 years, Mr. Compton awaits in dreamless sleep the voice of the Master calling him to life and glory. The funeral sermon was delivered by Elder G. E. Marsh of Marshalltown, Iowa.
