Hurley G. Ray, 86

Hurley G. Ray, 86, of Tekamah, died Saturday, August 25, 2012, at Oakland Heights in Oakland.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, August 30, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tekamah. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Wednesday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Home in Tekamah. Visitation will also be Thursday at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Herman Cemetery.

Hurley Gene Ray was born August 12, 1926, in rural Tekamah to Charley and Mettie (Sears) Ray.

He attended country school near Tekamah and graduated from Tekamah High School in 1945. He played football on a local town team.

On April 11, 1951, he married Margaret Effken at Madison.

They lived and farmed west of Herman until his retirement in 1988, when they moved to Tekamah.

He was a member of the Emmanuel Church in Tekamah. He volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels and serving coffee at the Golden Living Center in Tekamah and Good Shepherd Home in Blair.

He enjoyed gardening, yard work, socializing and participating in activities at the Chatt Center. He was a devoted Husker fan, loved playing cards and was an avid walker. He loved to tell stories and share jokes.

He was a wonderful grandfather. He was his grandkids' biggest fan at their many activities.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Doug Schroedter of West Point; son, Mark and his friend, Pam, of Valley; son and daughter-in-law, John and Janelle of Herman; six grandchildren and their spouses, Melissa (Mike) Simmons of Lincoln, Mark (Adrianne) Ray of Oklahoma, Kiley Ray and Corey of Fremont, Grant Ray, Abra (Jeremy) Bridges, Morgan Ray all of Herman; 10 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Beth and George Gove of Arizona; brother-in-law, Gordon Cram of Oakland; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by wife, Margaret on Dec. 14, 2006; son, Thomas; brothers, Dale, Charles and Boyd Ray; and sisters, Gladith Cram and Gertie Marr.

Memorials are suggested to the family.
