Ruby A. Hovendick, 86, of Tekamah died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013, at Golden Living Center in Tekamah.

A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at the Herman Legion Hall in Herman.

Ruby Alvena Pedersen was born Dec. 20, 1926, in rural Kennard to Nels Amos and June Louise (Cushman) Pedersen.

After graduating from Blair High School, she moved to Tekamah to work. She met her future husband while working as a clerk in the dime store.

She married Roland Hovendick on June 22, 1948.

The couple farmed together their entire lifetime until retiring and moving to Blair.

While farming, she worked intermittently as a telephone operator and at Tekseed in Tekamah.

The couple had four children: Wayne, Harold, Terry and Kathleen. Mrs. Hovendick lived a happy life with her husband while bringing up their children on the farm.

She enjoyed having a large garden, freezing and canning and raised many chickens over the years. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting. She was an excellent cook – always baking cinnamon rolls, donuts and pies.

She is survived by her son, Wayne Hovendick and wife Pat of Oakland; daughter Kathleen Gilson and husband Terry of Waterloo; daughter-in-law Tammi Hovendick of Herman; sister Sharon Cary of Griswold, Iowa; grandchildren: Sean Hovendick of Albany, N.Y., Michelle Collette of Sunnyvale, Calif., Matthew Hovendick of Aberdeen, S.D, Collin Hovendick of Oakland and Morgan Hovendick of Herman; three great-grandsons: Christian and Max Collette of Sunnyvale, and Jourden Hovendick of Albany.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland; sons Harold and Terry; sister Lila Plummer; and brother Fred Pedersen.
